Test Your Perception

I want to invite you to test your hearing and perception.

I have posted a couple of sound clips on Sound Cloud.

Here is the first.

The question is… Is this sound effect Stereo or Mono?

Please don’t download the sound until after you have made your decision.

Please use your ears and your perception to decide, don’t load it into a DAW and investigate.

Having trouble deciding?

It is subtle isn’t it.

When you have made a decision and not before, here is a mono version of the same sound.

You can hear the difference right?

So what do you think is going on?

Again, is the first one stereo?

I discovered something really interesting about sound earlier and how we perceive space and I wanted to share it with you.

Please don’t cheat, just use your ears and post in the comments box below.

When I have enough confused sound engineers, I will post the solution.

  1. My first instinct was the 1st is stereo but I cant put my finger on what makes it ‘sound more stereo then the 2nd’ so Its probably my perception being fooled right? and then the use of language.

once I had read….”Okay, here is a mono version of the same sound.

It is subtle isn’t it.” I could not get it out of my head that there must be a subtle difference…..

    1. The files are different and the cleverness is in the audio not in the language used to describe it.

There is no pursuasive language happening here, I don’t know enough about mind tricks or NLP to do that.

I know a thing or two about sound though 🙂
